What is Internet Marketing?

The phrase “Internet Marketing” seem synonymous to all businesses on the internet. Actually I really didn’t bother to know it’s definition because I always assume that this area is for the gurus of marketing strategies on the internet. But somehow it bothers me because some blog owners claim that they are internet marketers but actually they are just blogging and putting ads on their website and say that they are on to “internet marketing” (sorry no offense meant). So I made a little bit of research what really is the definition. Again Wiki has a very detailed explanation about internet marketing and I will just quote the heart or the summary of it:

Internet marketing, also referred to as web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet. ………….Internet marketing does not simply entail building or promoting a website, nor does it mean placing a banner ad on another website. Effective Internet marketing requires a comprehensive strategy that synergizes a given company’s business model and sales goals with its website function and appearance, focusing on its target market through proper choice of advertising type, media, and design.

So merely building a website or a blog and promoting it and putting advertising banners or links does not mean that it is already internet marketing. I my opinion those things are just a product or component of internet marketing. One business model that I think is a good example of internet marketing is the selling of advertising. To make that business model you need advertisers, publishers and the middleman. Advertisers buy advertisement and publishers sell advertisement and the middle man is the one who manages that business model. The middleman which is the internet marketer, the advertisers and publishers are components of  internet marketing.  There are various business model that falls under internet marketing like for example ecommerce, selling of ebooks, affiliate marketing and lead based websites.

I also read in an internet marketing article in about.com that in the past (before the internet was born), marketing strategies are product oriented. But since the emergence of internet marketing , it was now customer oriented. Managing to satisfy your customers. Why is that? I think it’s because in the internet, the word of mouth is like a ‘wild fire’. An unsatisfied customer will tell the whole world in the speed of light (correct me if I’m wrong if the speed of light is different from the speed of electronic signal). Because of this technology the time frame is shortened that is why many internet marketers became millionaires and billionaires in a short period of time.
