Tilapia Farming

Manny, May 18, 2007July 12, 2019

Raising and selling tilapia is a lucrative business for most fish pond and fish pen owners here in our country. The main reasons are because they are hardy, grow quickly and require inexpensive feeds. The two types I know are raising tilapia in fish pens and in fish ponds.

If you live near a bay like for example Laguna bay, it’s much easier than a fish pond because the water is already there and feeding them is not as much as when you will raise tilapia in a fish pond because there is natural food already in the lake like planktons or other small organisms. Building pens on the bay with the use of bamboo and of course labor, fingerlings, feeds and permits are the essential things to worry about.

But if you will consider digging a farm land for raising tilapia, you will need a bigger capital. Let’s say at least 500,000 pesos. You have to lease a land, rent a bulldozer to dig a pond, invest a water pump if you are far from a water source, buy fingerlings, a professional service of an aquaculture engineer and register to a local government.

There are also factors to consider like fish density for a given square meter of pond which are applicable to both fish pen and fish pond. Just to give you an idea for example you should only raise 3 to 8 tilapia per square meter of the fish pond. Quality and quantity of feeds to be given should also be considered. If you have business plan of tilapia farming it is best to attend a seminar in TLRC which they are conducting every month. Just search this site for TLRC Courses Available for their schedule or go to the TLRC website.

    @carlos may sugat ang tilapia mo. try mo maglagay ng sea salt sa isang fishnet then ibabad mo sa tubig. I believe this will cure the wound of tilapia.

    to Ruel. sir, sa tingin ko po ay over crowded pa rin po yun. sir, ganito na lang po. try to imagine your fishes when it reaches its full sizes. para po ma tantya nyo po kung ilan lang po dapat. tsaka po, dapat ay running water po ang inyong fond. plus, hindi dapat magaspang ang “Wall” ng inyong fond. it could be harmful to your fishes. yun lang po.

    @ben esteban

    tama po si manuel, Base po sa experience namin at least ang pwede lang po ilagay na bilang per sqm at 50 pcs to 60 pcs para po sila ay lumaki. Kung overcrowding ang area sayang lan gpo ang pakain.

    September 25, 2010 at 6:19 pm

    Kami po ay may alagang tilapia sa dating kulungan ng mga baboy namin, ngunit matagal lumaki ang mga ito kahit palagian naming pinapakain ng fish feeds. Ano po ang dapat naming gawin para mapabilis ang paglaki ng mga tilapia namin.

    1. Manuel says:
      September 26, 2010 at 2:11 pm

      @Ben Esteban
      Baka po crowded yung fish pen ninyo kaya hindi lumalaki yung tilapia. Dapat kasi may tamang dami ng tilapia per cubic meter.

    as part of the livelihood program of our organization (ANCOP fo Couples for Christ), we plan to raise tilapia in backyards inside drums? Is this possible?
    are there available materials to read or seminar to attend regarding this?

      June 1, 2010 at 9:00 pm

      @ Lozano R. Brozas
      TRC have an electronic library called eTRC – eLibrary. You have to register and buy a prepaid card to buy their training books and videos which you can download from their website. They have a training on tilapia culture but not sure if they have the raising the tilapia inside drums.

      @stifnec
      Mas okey siguro kung kukuha ka ng seminar instead of giving you advice. May mga feasibility studies yung mga seminars kaya mas makakapag-decide ka ng hindi ka malulugi.

    hello. I already have a fishpond. I just stated it a month ago. i dont have enough knowledge regarding tilapya farming but my husband and I just tried it by ourselves. How can I improve my production how about the cleaning of the ponds, is it ok if the water is almost brown in color with I think oil? I am using pure feeds from b-meg/. Please help. Thank you.

      @lea rabaria
      It’s best to have a training or buy training materials. TRC have trainings on tilapia culture and also have electronic books on their etechnobank.
